Teenage Boy In Wheelchair Playing Basketball With Friends

When children are young and full of energy it can be easier to encourage them to be active. Keeping children active may become difficult as they grow due to school, a working family, technology, and social barriers with other kids.

It is recommended that children be active for one hour each day. This hour of activity can be divided up throughout the day and does not need to be completed all at once. Here are some ideas that may be useful when working with your children to get them moving:

  • Restrict screen time. Dedicate an hour each day when your child is not in front of a screen.
  • Play! If your child plays a sport at school or outside with friends, that counts toward their active hour.
  • Assign household chores like sweeping the house, mowing the lawn, or walking the dog.
  • Plan a family activity such as a walk after dinner. If the weather is bad, play some music and dance!
  • If there is an activity center near you, check out what types of programs they have.
  • Riding a bike is a fun way to get your child active. It is important to make sure they wear a helmet and know the rules of the road.
  • Yoga has become an interest for many children. It is a great way to stretch and decompress from the day. Here are some child-friendly routines to try with your children.

Movement is so important for you and your children’s health and well-being. Exercise helps with success in school, reduces anxiety and depression, and improves long-term health. Find ways to stay active together! An easy way to start is to encourage your children to go outdoors.
